It's Hip to Paper Piece!

Students will learn the basics of this technique by creating a 5" block that we will join into a 4-block setting to create a larger scale design...  a fun variation on the traditional pinwheel block! Rotate the 5" blocks before assembling into the final 10" block and a whole new pattern emerges. OR you can choose to make a stand-alone block that is a great pattern in which to incorporate "fussy cut" novelty prints and scraps such as you might find in our Hip Stitch Grab Bags! See Class Prep document for all the details!

Why paper piece? Complex designs become "easy peasy", even for a novice quilter... Angles and curves come out looking picture perfect, and there is no special ruler/template required, which means you don't need a lot of space to store a million rulers/templates. Paper Piecing gives you the ability to tell a story with fabric, because you can piece portraits of people, animals, landscapes, book covers... images that often seem impossible using traditional piecing methods.

Class price includes the book "Learn to Paper Piece" by Nancy Mahoney featuring the block we will be making (book includes 5 block patterns as well as patterns and instructions for 5 quilts PLUS tips and tricks for the technique itself and for creating even more quilt variations from just these 5 blocks). Students get to shop the store with a 15% discount to select the perfect fabrics and/or any required or recommended supplies for the class.

Instructor Name:
Julia Murtha
Instructor Bio:
A quilter who also knits, crochets, and dabbles in hand embroidery, and is an enthusiastic Project Linus Blanketeer and Halloween/Cosplay costumer, Julia is a long-time member of a group of crafty video bloggers called Talk to Me Tuesday (you can find them on Wordpress)... it's basically an online "show and tell" consisting of members who have spanned the globe over the years. They periodically participate in swaps with each other as well as ask for crafty advice and cheer each other on in their crafty endeavors, regardless of the craft or technique.

Julia says she was introduced to Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) by her long time BFF (a former professional quilt designer and founder of TTMT) and her fellow TTMTers. They often use FPP to create one-of-a-kind designs related to their favorite books, tv shows, films, and video games that they then share with other fans.

Julia loves how the technique of FPP can be used to create intricate, complicated looking designs by anyone who has at least basic machine sewing skills, and she's excited to share her favorite piecing method with you!
