Paper Piecing Basics

Students will learn the basics of this technique by creating a unique block that can stand alone or create a repeating pattern when joined together in multiples.

Why paper piece? Complex designs become "easy peasy", even for a novice quilter... Angles/shapes come out sharp and precise. Paper Piecing gives you the ability to tell a story with fabric, because you can piece portraits of people, animals, landscapes, book covers... images that often seem impossible using traditional piecing methods. It can also be a great way to use scraps left from other projects!

Class price includes the foundation piecing pattern by instructor Julia, who will email you a Class Details document that will include minimum fabric requirements and required supplies/notions as well as some that are highly recommended. Students get to shop the store with a 20 percent discount for relevant notions, supplies, and/or fabrics (excludes sewing machines, machine service/repair, and Hip Stitch exclusive fabrics).

This class is designed for those who are beginners in the technique of foundation paper piecing, but is not a beginning sewing class. You will be expected to already know how to thread your machine, wind/change your bobbin, change your presser foot, change your needle, and adjust/change your stitch length. If you are new to sewing, or need a refresher, please sign up for "Hip Stitch Basics".

Instructor: Julia Murtha
Instructor Bio: A quilter who also knits, crochets, dabbles in hand embroidery, and is an enthusiastic Project Linus Blanketeer, Julia is a long-time member of a group of crafty video bloggers called Talk to Me Tuesday (talktometuesday.wordpress.com). It's basically an online "show and tell" consisting of various members that come and go and span the globe. Julia says she was introduced to Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) by her long time BFF (a former professional quilt designer and founder of TTMT) and her fellow TTMTers. They often use FPP to create one-of-a-kind designs related to their favorite books, tv shows, films, and video games that they then share with other fans. Julia loves how the technique of FPP can be used to create intricate, complicated looking designs by anyone who has at least basic machine sewing skills, and she's excited to share her favorite piecing method with you!
