Learn to Paper Piece

Learn to Paper Piece

Introduction to Foundation Paper Piecing. In this beginner-friendly class, students will learn the basics of foundation paper piecing by creating a set of four 6" blocks, which combine to form a striking 12" modern windmill variation. By rotating your individual blocks before joining them, you'll reveal an entirely new, eye-catching pattern!

Why paper piece? This technique makes complex-looking designs “easy peasy”, even for novice quilters. Angles and curves come out clean and crisp, with no special templates or rulers required. With paper piecing, you can tell incredible stories with fabric, from portraits and animals to landscapes and abstract art.

What’s included: Your class fee includes a custom foundation piecing pattern designed by instructor Julia. You’ll receive a downloadable PDF via email that includes the pattern, fabric requirements, required tools and notions, and a few highly recommended extras!

Important: This is a beginner-level class for paper piecing, but it is not a beginner sewing class. You should already be comfortable with:

  • Threading your sewing machine
  • Winding and changing your bobbin
  • Changing your presser foot and needle
  • Adjusting your stitch length

If you’re brand new to sewing or would like a refresher, we recommend starting with our Hip Stitch Basics class before enrolling.

Instructor: Julia Murtha
Instructor Bio: A quilter who also knits, crochets, dabbles in hand embroidery, and is an enthusiastic Project Linus Blanketeer, Julia is a long-time member of a group of crafty video bloggers called Talk to Me Tuesday (talktometuesday.wordpress.com). It's basically an online "show and tell" consisting of various members that come and go and span the globe. Julia says she was introduced to Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) by her long time BFF (a former professional quilt designer and founder of TTMT) and her fellow TTMTers. They often use FPP to create one-of-a-kind designs related to their favorite books, tv shows, films, and video games that they then share with other fans. Julia loves how the technique of FPP can be used to create intricate, complicated looking designs by anyone who has at least basic machine sewing skills, and she's excited to share her favorite piecing method with you!
