Paper Piecing 2: Multi-segment blocks
In this class students will be piecing two or more separate segments that they'll then join together into a 6inch finished pictorial block.
Why paper piece? This technique makes complex-looking designs “easy peasy”, even for novice quilters. Angles and curves come out clean and crisp, with no special templates or rulers required. With paper piecing, you can tell incredible stories with fabric, from portraits and animals to landscapes and abstract art.
Required: Seasonally Scrappy book by Leila Gardunia (this the same book we used in the class Paper Piecing for Beginners). Combining two of Julia's favorites (foundation piecing and sewing with scraps) this book contains 6 seasonal FPP (foundation paper pieced) patterns, 3 of which (including the pumpkin block you will make in this class) are made as separate segments that get joined together in a finished block, making this the perfect follow-up class to Paper Piecing for Beginners and for those wanting to expand their FPP skills.
Additional Required Supplies/Notions:
- Sewing machine in good working order (please contact the shop/instructor if you need to borrow a machine) with new needle installed (universal is fine; 80/12 or 90/14)
- thread for piecing (use what you prefer, can be poly or cotton)
- enough fabric for at least one block: you'll need a background fabric (1/8 yd is sufficient for one block) and 2-5 fabrics for your pumpkin (leftover jelly roll strips or leftover binding strips are perfect for this) plus one small scrap for the stem of your pumpkin (needs to be at least 1.5in x 2.5in).
- at least one copy of page 17 from your book printed on the paper of your choice (Julia suggests you bring at least one extra copy to allow for mistakes or in case you have time to make more than one block)
Suggested Supplies/Notions:
- 6" Add a Quarter Ruler or 12" Add a Quarter Ruler - There will be a couple of these available to try out in class if you'd like to try before you purchase
- 20 sheet class pack of foundation paper
- Glue stick (washes out) - such as 505 Temp Adhesive Stick, Dritz Fabric Glue Stick, Washable School Glue stick
- Hip Stitch Grab bag (available in-store only) or Stash Expansion Pack (in case you don't want to use fabric from your stash)
- personal pressing station consisting of a pressing mat and small iron (we have both cordless and corded available for purchase)
Important Skills - Completion of Paper Piecing for Beginners, or experience successfully piecing a single-segment foundation pieced pattern. This is not a beginner-level class. You should already be comfortable with the following:
- Threading your sewing machine
- Winding and changing your bobbin
- Changing your presser foot and needle
- Adjusting your stitch length
- preparing your FPP pattern for sewing
- successfully piecing a single-segment block using FPP (foundation paper piecing)
- Trimming up your block

| Requirements: | Students should bring a machine they are familiar with and are comfortable using, your favorite piecing thread, and, if possible, have a new (or relatively new) needle in your machine and have your machine already threaded. Please arrive 15 minutes early to set up before class. Please bring at least one (preferably two) photocopy of the pumpkin pattern from page 17 of your book, copied at 100% printed on your preferred foundation paper. |
